Many people associate tantra with sex. But I rather say: Tantra is about love – about MAKING LOVE. And that love-making isn’t reduced to being with a partner. It's a love-making to LIFE!

It was the tantric field who taught me to EMBRACE my feelings and shadow sides - rather than try pushing them away. Through my years of tantric studies, I realised that my chances to feel my DIVINITY, lied in embracing my HUMANITY. As humans, we all have our share of dark sides. And the only way to embody any light is to learn to keep those dark sides within our conscious sight!

I experience tantra as the spiritual approach that most successfully integrates our twofold existence as BOTH human and divine beings. Whereas other spiritual environments tend to focus a lot on inner peace - but without offering any other tools than discipline to achieve that peace - tantric practices address our shadows, our relationship patterns and how to build our self-love. Basically, tantra addresses our human existence as THE GATEWAY to our divine essence – rather than its obstacle!

In this essay I explore more what tantra is and isn’t - from my perspective. Here is an essay on including the human aspect in our spiritual journey: Four Steps of Individuation - Self-Realization Demands Much More Than Meditation. And in this one I explore common traps of a spiritual journey: 9 Traps of A Spiritual Journey.

I’m Ida Eira

I spent my twenties running from myself, and stumbled into my thirties depressed and disillusioned. In 2017, dedicated to rebuild my life in a more inspiring way, I threw myself into an extensive deconstruction process. I quit my job, sold my home and went abroad looking for teachers who could show me the way back to myself. Initially, my focus was meditation, but in my quest for a deeper understanding of energy, sexuality and interpersonal relationships, I entered a deep study with tantric master Shantam Nityama and one of his students: Iya Omitola.

The following years became a full-time commitment to wake myself up. I initiated into IFA, spent several periodes in Sadhgurus ashram in south of India, and explored a variety of healing techniques. Amongst all these, it was addressing my sexual energy that changed things for me. As I learnt how to stay with and manage my sexuality: my creativity and intelligence reawoke – and so did my self-love. A life of pretenses and armoring started cracking up – and I found my lust for life back.

Because the tantric work made such a change for me, I wanted to pass it on. And initially, that was why I started developing Ida Eira (which I at first called Tunsberg Tantra): to support women in my community to find their way back to, maneuver and take ownership of their sexual life force energy.

But as I continued to develop my vision, the focus on sexuality stepped a bit into the background. I realised there are a lot of people out there sharing practices to reclaim our sexuality  - and that they’re much more skilled in this than I am.

Rather, it feels that my unique contribution lies in the embrace of our very-human complexity: our feeling world and our shadow sides. I experience that this embrace is entirely essential to claim our self-love, and also to relate sanely and supportively to others.

Today, my aim with this work is to support both my fellow sisters and other spiritual seekers in this embrace. Because so often, in our desire to be “good”, we try PUSHING our darkest sides away. But thats not possible! Our feelings and shadow sides exist whether we acknowledge them or not! So really, the sanest way to relate to them, is to bring them into the light - and keep them where we can see them.
